    Description

Vintage Crate PA 400 Powered 4 Channel Mixer Wood Panels Built in Spring Reverb
Works, doesn’t  work. Confused, don’t be. Channel 1&2 presently are not working, 3&4 seem fine. About as simple as it gets, mic and line inputs, I’ve only checked the mic inputs and #3 and #4 work fine, without a line level device I wasn’t able to test the line inputs.
This is NOT A BRUTE the power output is rather low, it says 60 watts at 4 ohms, and it clips out pretty quickly, I have provided a photo of the inside, pretty simple here too. For what it’s worth there’s a Accutronics spring reverb, it’s a short tank and so is the reverb tail, yes it works.
Overall this is a old funky vintage item, 1980’s I would think, I’ve wiped it down but it is still far from new in appearance, the wood panels are somewhat beat, and there’s still some dirt and dust. Semi-functional (2 bad channels) and nostalgia inducing, it’s brings you back to that first mixer you had in high school when you played in a lame cover band, possibly a punk band, or even a prog-rock outfit, let’s not forget a white-boy suck ass blues band, Stevie Ray Vaughan you were not!
I believe this is quite repairable, the design is textbook electronics 101, I know the potentiometer on channel two is totally f’ed, it spins around and around, probably a part, I wouldn’t recommend taking it to a shop to fix as the labor cost will far surpass the value of the mixer, if you’re clever with a soldering iron and know the difference between a capacitor and resistor this might be a fun project.
I almost forgot, I didn’t photo the bottom, there’s a missing rubber foot and the screw that holds it down, channel two’s volume knob is missing the insert that indicates position, it’s amazing that more aren’t missing as those things totally suck, any old console or FX unit that had then lost them.
