VINTAGE 1930s RCA 44-A Velocity RIBBON MICROPHONE  with New Ribbon and Grille Cloth
First made around 1933, this is an early model of the classic "44" style RCA mic that would become an iconic fixture in radio and recording studios well into the 1950s.
The 44-A is the first version of the 44 series to find worldwide use. It differs from the later 44-BX by it's magnet shape and it's trim. It's output is lower than a 44-BX.
This mic has been fitted out with a new ribbon by Darrin at Big "D" Broadcast Exchange in Feb. 2021
It has been tested and is working and sounding fine.
This is a rare black version with gold-plated grille.
Cosmetically, it is good for its age. Please study the pix. The grille is in good shape - no big dents or broken spots, only a few worn places. Only the RCA nameplate on the front of the mic is missing. It comes with the yoke and the base plate that can bolt on to a threaded fitting of your choice [not included].
This is a heavy mic. Don't even think about putting it on any but the most robust stand.
With its new ribbon, the mic sounds just like my other ribbon mikes: big, warm, smooth on the bass. This particular unit has a dark, full sound. It will make your voice sound like God if you get any closer than 9 inches. Great for sax, vocals, brass, and those "ballsy" voice overs. Not recommended for triangle or cymbals.
The "figure eight" pattern allows pickup on both front and back equally, with a really sharp dropoff on the sides, which can be very useful.
A "pre-preamp" is a must. The Cloudlifter is good, but more affordable alternatives are the Coda Music Technologies box or the Cathedral Pipes Durham MKII. Both sound great and are quiet. The Coda has about 5 db more gain.
One thing about these low-output magnetic microphones: you have to be careful about hum. In my recording room ribbon mics must be oriented carefully for the least hum pickup from all the equipment. In an open room away from power transformers and other hum producers they are quiet and well-behaved.
The mic will be well-packed and insured and sent via FedEx. The 'handling cost' is for insurance.
